About Me
Hi, I’m Nicola and I’m a chemist and researcher.
I have experience in the synthesis and the advanced structural characterization of inorganic materials and nanomaterials. I’m also active in the promotion of scientific culture and of the role of researchers in the society.
Experience
II-VI semiconductors like CdSe are widely used to develop materials in optoelectronics. They generally have a zincblende or a wurtzite crystal structure, but they are also prone to develop defects in the structure, like planar defects. These defects are difficult to study and control, but they are important for both tuning the properties of the materials and understanding synthesis mechanisms.

Tackling the big climate change problem means facing many interconnected challenges. Rethinking our strategies for the synthesis of inorganic materials is a big one, as it will pave the way for the development of greener and sustainable alternatives. Here we pushed the boundaries of green approaches to nanomaterials.

High pressure continuous flow synthesis of (nano)materials allows to tune the properties of water as a solvent. This scalable approach unlocks countless new pathways to develop sustainable approaches to technologically pivotal materials.
Probing the surface chemistry of colloidal nanosystems is an open issue with no established route. The Mastai Lab strive to develop alternative approaches to it.
I was an assistant teacher for the inorganic chemistry course (MSc Chemistry). Moreover, I held a crash course on chemistry tailored for applicants to the Medicine and Surgery course of the University (approx. 200 participants).

Concrete is the second-most-used substance in the world after water. A great leap forward in material science is required to aid the transition to a more sustainable future, and concrete can only play a central role.

A Little More About Me
Research plays a pivotal role in shaping the future of our society, and research is performed by researchers. Since 2016 I have been constantly involved in the flow of analysis, debate and production of policy inputs that different association of PhD candidates and early-stage researches are generating to improve and optimize doctoral training and working conditions. I am currently the Skill Officer for Eurodoc.
I am truly passionate about both chemistry and working in science in general, and I love to show the beauty of it. For this reason, I was involved in many outreach and science dissemination projects: form thematic events for informed debates with experts, to crazy and fun shows for small children!
